Tithing With Debt: Should You Tithe While Paying Off Debt?

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: Discerning God's Direction For Your Situation

God doesn't need your money, but He desires your heart.

When debt and tithing compete for your limited resources, the question isn't just where your money goes, but what your choice reveals about your trust in Him.

After exploring God's ownership and biblical examples of giving during hardship, we arrive at the most practical question: "What should I do in my specific situation?" I personally don’t believe the tension between tithing and debt repayment isn't resolved through a one-size-fits-all answer.

Instead, it requires guidance from God for your specific situation.

As Author Ron Blue wisely notes, "The question of whether to use the tithe money to fund debt repayment is a very serious spiritual decision that can only be made with much prayer and godly counsel."

This is ultimately about discernment, not simply following a financial formula.

James 1:5 offers this reassurance: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault."

This is particularly comforting when facing difficult financial decisions. God doesn't begrudgingly offer guidance; He gives wisdom "generously" and "without finding fault."

What might this discernment process look like practically?

  1. Pray specifically about your tithing and debt situation, asking God for clear direction
  2. Study Scripture principles on both giving and debt management
  3. Seek godly counsel from mature believers who demonstrate both generosity and financial wisdom
  4. Listen for the Spirit's leading through times of prayer, Scripture, circumstances, and counsel
  5. Take a step of faith based on what you believe God is directing you to do

Remember that faith requires action without complete understanding.

As Ron Blue also points out, "Faith requires a first step without fully seeing how it's all going to work out. Getting out of debt requires elements very typical of the faith walk."

Some believers feel led to continue or even increase giving while aggressively paying down debt. Others feel led to temporarily adjust their giving percentage while maintaining some giving. Still others implement creative approaches like gradually increasing their giving percentage as debt decreases.

The specific path matters less than the heart behind it and the faithfulness to follow God's personal direction. What's universally true is that both tithing and debt repayment should be approached as acts of stewardship under God's ownership.

Whichever direction God leads you, remember that the goal isn't just debt freedom or meeting a giving percentage. The greater purpose is developing a lifestyle of faithful stewardship that acknowledges God's ownership in everything.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Am I willing to follow God's guidance for my finances even if it doesn't make immediate financial sense?
  2. Have I earnestly sought God's direction about tithing while in debt, or have I made assumptions based solely on financial calculations?
  3. What might be holding me back from fully trusting God's guidance in this area?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you give wisdom generously when I ask. I need your guidance about how to honor you with both giving and debt repayment. Help me to discern your voice clearly and give me courage to follow your leading, even when it doesn't align with conventional financial wisdom. I surrender my finances completely to you, acknowledging that it all belongs to you anyway. Show me how to be a faithful steward of what you've entrusted to me.

In Jesus' name, amen.
