Responding to the Way
A Multiplying Promise
When Peter tells those who had been “cut to the heart” that the promise of Jesus was not only for them but for their children and for many others, He understood that no person should be the final destination of God’s truth or love. We’re commanded and even designed to pass on the good news we receive from God to others. This came naturally to the woman at the well in John 4. She told everyone she knew about her encounter with Jesus. Many believed because of her testimony at first and later believed because they encountered Jesus themselves. This is an amazing picture of how God’s plan to redeem people through Jesus would multiply. We see in Acts 1:8 that the witness of Christ would spread from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria and to the ends of the earth. The woman at the well showed how it would happen from person to person and mouth to ear.
Jesus also had an interesting exchange with the disciples while this woman was sharing with everyone in her village. He talks about a plentiful harvest being ready to be picked, and then He says something remarkable: “the harvest is people.” Jesus is saying that there are people all around us, like a harvest, waiting to hear His message. Laborers like the woman at the well are needed to go out and bring in the harvest. But this kind of labor is driven more by love than by wages. Our reward is seeing others encounter Jesus and experience the promise for themselves.
Who around you is waiting to hear the good news of Jesus? How can you share what Jesus has done for you with them?
Prayer
“God, help me be excited about sharing with others about You. Help me to pass on the promise of salvation that You have given to me.”
