The source of life
READ ROMANS 6
My 4-year-old son has recently developed a fascination with videos of ships being tossed about in enormous seas. It’s both terrifying and beautiful witnessing creation in all its glory. Some of the ships we witness are colossal, yet compared to the power of the ocean, they are so small.
As I sit at my desk to write these thoughts, I have a small water bottle by my side. It strikes me as fascinating that the substance that keeps me hydrated as I write is the same (albeit a bit less salty) that throws around the world’s largest vessels like they are nothing.
In Romans 6, we see something very similar. The mighty act of God – raising Jesus from the dead – is also the source of our new life with Him.
Interestingly, the symbolic act that represents this life transformation also involves water. In baptism, the believer descends into the water, which has the power to take away life. Yet as they emerge, it is that same water that represents the cleansing of sin and being born again. It is a breathtaking revelation to realise that the God of creation, the mighty King who raised Jesus from the grave, is the very same God who calls us by His mercy to new life with Him.
