Learning to Be Compassionate: 6 Kid-Friendly Steps

DAY 2 OF 6

## Being a Blessing The Big Idea: Now that you’ve counted your own blessings, it’s time to use those to bless others. God has a purpose for your family, and it includes being a blessing to others. We can share the good gifts we’ve been given with those around us, including our teachers, family members, friends and beyond. When we give, God is pleased with us. Hebrews 13:16 (NIV) says, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Giving to others is also love in action, which is the definition of compassion. Encouraging your kids to give and do so freely is an excellent way to teach them the importance of compassion. Pass-It-On Game Let’s get the conversation started about how God blesses us and how we can bless others. Here’s a quick car game to enjoy with your kids on the way to or from school or weekly activities. Describe one good gift God gave you when he made you. For example, you may be able to cook delicious meals or create beautiful art. Allow your kids to share one good gift God gave them too. Then ask: What part of that gift can you share with others? Create a Blessing Bag Creating blessing bags is a simple way to show love to those who need it the most. First, grab a gallon-size freezer bag, then read on. As a family, think of someone you know who could use a blessing. The sky’s the limit! It could be a sick grandparent, a classmate, a neighbor or a homeless person your child has noticed. Make a list of simple items that could be a blessing to that person. Also, allow your child to include items they make using their own talents. For example, if your child is an artist, encourage him or her to make a drawing or a card. Gather the items your family has listed and put them in your bag. Plan when you can deliver your “Blessing Bag,” and pray as a family for the person you are seeking to bless. After you deliver your package, talk about Ephesians 2:10. How did God prepare your family to be a blessing? Scripture: Ephesians 2:10
