Drifting

DAY 5 OF 5

SERVING Picking up where we left off yesterday...another way our natural tendency towards self-centeredness plays out is in our drifting away from serving others. Sure, it feels great to help someone else…you get that warm fuzzy feeling that you did something good and noble. Who wouldn’t want that? The problem is that feelings fade quickly and that potential for warm fuzzies isn’t always enough to motivate you to wake up early and help someone move, or head to church for the 17th week in a row to serve in kids ministry. So, what do we do? Well, you’re probably noticing a theme here, but staying anchored to God and applying a little discipline to your habits will do wonders for avoiding this drift. One-off serving opportunities are great, and we should always do what we can to help someone else when God puts the opportunity in front of us. But, one of the most transformational things I’ve found is committing to serve regularly somewhere. This could be at church, volunteering at any number of community organizations, or tutoring someone who needs help with their grades. Setting a recurring, weekly opportunity to serve somebody else as a way of expressing your love for the Lord will do wonders for your spiritual growth. So, what are you good at? What are you interested in? How has God wired you and how can you use that to serve someone else regularly? Read these passages and spend some time praying that God would show you an opportunity to serve.
