Is Coronavirus a Judgment from God?

DAY 5 OF 7

How do we know this is not the end of the world? Because you don't stop God’s judgment with a vaccine. You don’t stop God’s judgment with a pill. You don’t stop God’s judgment by closing your borders or staying inside for a while. If the coronavirus pandemic were truly God's judgment, humanity would not be able to prevent it or diminish it in the slightest. > But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 2 Peter 3:7 There will be a day of judgment in the future, and it will not be stopped. But today is not that day. Think about it. If coronavirus were God’s judgment, then we apparently possess the power to stop God or at least slow Him down. Furthermore, if coronavirus were from God, then is He most angry with senior citizens who are the most susceptible? Finally, if coronavirus were from God, then shouldn’t we be praying for its spread? After all, as believers, we would want to work with God’s plan, not against it! Do you see how foolish it is to claim that coronavirus is God’s judgment on the world? Still, some people carry on saying this is God’s discipline or God “getting our attention.” Imagine if you disciplined your own children or “got their attention” by injecting them with a lethal virus. You would (and should) be reported to Child Protective Services! But we project this sort of behavior onto our God and Father and entertain the idea that this is how He treats His children? This is not God’s agape love for us. This is not the truth that sets us free. Today is the Day of Salvation It is true that the Old Testament is filled with many examples of judgment from God upon humans as a result of their disobedience. The Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Plagues of Egypt and many other events are examples of how God inflicted physical punishment, including disasters and diseases, for sin. That’s obvious. We also read that, at the end of the age, whoever does not receive Christ will undergo judgment for their sins. We see this in Revelation 20 and in Matthew 25, for example. This too is obvious. However, the question today is not: “Is the Old Testament filled with judgment of sin?” or “Is there a future day of judgment?” The answer to both of those questions is clearly, yes. The question today is this: “Is God striking people with coronavirus as a judgment for sin?” And the answer to that is a definitive no . Today is a day of salvation, not a day of judgment (2 Corinthians 6:2). There is going to be a Day of Judgment, but today is not that day . We live in an era when we need to be preaching the Gospel that saves, not the coronavirus that kills. The Gospel that saves is from God. The coronavirus that kills is from a bat. Yes, it seems that the virus was transmitted to us through our own poor decisions (trapping and eating wild animals) that increased the risk of transmitting disease from animals to humans. However, these consequences of our own actions are not God’s judgment upon us.
