Live Without Regret

DAY 1 OF 5

5 REASONS YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR PURPOSE Do you need direction? Do you feel unstable or insignificant? Do you need provision from God? Knowing your purpose will give you fulfillment, direction, stability, significance, and provision. Hank Aaron was born in a section of Mobile, Ala. referred to as “Down the Bay” and spent most of his youth in Toulminville, Ala. He grew up in a poor family, and picked cotton. To this day people often say that picking cotton helped Hank strengthen his hands so he could hit more home runs. His family couldn't afford baseball equipment, so he practiced by hitting bottle caps with sticks and often created his own bat and balls out of materials he found on the street. On April 13, 1954, Aaron made his major league debut playing for the Milwaukee Braves. Three years later, the New York Yankees played host to the Milwaukee Braves in the 1957 World Series. As Aaron stepped into the batter’s box, he was greeted by the infamous, distracting chatter from catcher Yogi Berra. “Henry, you’re holding that bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn't say a word. Before the second pitch was thrown, Yogi taunted him again. “Henry, you’re supposed to hold the bat so you can read the trademark.” As the pitch crossed the plate, he hit a home run over the left field wall. After rounding the bases and tagging home plate, he looked at Yogi Berra and said, “I didn't come up here to read.” Aaron knew why he was here. You need to know why you are here, too. You need to know why God created you and what His purposes are for your life. My all-time favorite verse is found in Acts 20:24, in which Paul says, “I no longer consider my life as dear unto myself, only that I fulfill the mission and calling given to me by God Himself.” (NLT) I love how Paul had such great clarity concerning his purpose and calling. I sincerely believe every Christ follower can have the same clarity. You were made for a mission and fulfilling your purpose is an essential part of living.  Knowing your purpose will give your life meaning. Five reasons why discovering your purpose is critical: Knowing your purpose addresses a lack of fulfillment. A lack of fulfillment is tied to lack of purpose and lack of purpose is tied to lack of calling. Knowing your purpose will help you find direction. Purpose answers the question, “Where am I going?” This is critical because direction is always tied to a destination. Knowing your purpose addresses the problem of stability. Purpose creates stability, because circumstances no longer control your decisions. Knowing your purpose confirms your significance. Too many of us feel insignificant. Only you can fulfill your purpose. You matter! Knowing your purpose addresses the problem of provision. God always provides where He guides. The Bible is filled with examples of God’s provision for people’s callings: Noah and the Ark; David and Goliath; Moses and the Red Sea; Daniel in the Lion’s Den. God is committed to provide for His calling on your life. Do you need direction? Do you feel unstable or insignificant?  Do you need provision from God?  Knowing your purpose will give you fulfillment, direction, stability, significance, and provision.
