3 Biblical Strategies for Making Tough Decisions

DAY 2 OF 6

Sometimes, when we have decisions to make, we don’t know which way to turn. Other times, we know the right thing to do, but we hesitate.

Esther was chosen to be the queen of the Babylonians because of her beauty. She is a Jew, raised during the time when Israel was exiled to Babylon. Her parents are likely dead, and Mordecai is a kinsman, the man who has raised her like his own daughter. He hears that someone high in the king’s court is planning to destroy all the Jews, and he sends word to Esther, asking her to go to the king on their behalf.

But Esther knew that going to the king uninvited would mean death unless the king showed mercy. Initially, she told Mordecai, “No. I can’t do it.” He sends word again, reminding her that God has placed her in the king’s household for just this reason. Still unsure of the outcome, she asks Mordecai and the Jews of the city to fast. Fasting is abstaining from food and drink specifically to seek God’s wisdom for a situation.

We can learn from Esther and Mordecai. When we’re facing a hard decision, we can talk to God about it and ask our friends to join us. Like a huddle on the football field, we’re stronger when we stand with others. But with friends or alone, we can talk to God because he loves us and waits to hear from us.

Prayer: God, I don’t know which way to turn, but I know you love me. I know I can trust you and bring all of my worries to you. Help me know what to do today. Amen.
