An angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah and his wife to tell them they would be blessed with a son. The angel explained that their son would be dedicated to God and that his hair must never be cut. Samson was strong enough to kill a lion with his bare hands and fierce enough to kill 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. The Philistine leaders were eager to capture Samson, so they offered a woman named Delilah a sum of money to uncover the secret of Samson's strength. Using seduction and deception, Delilah convinced Samson to admit that his strength would leave him if his hair was cut. While he slept, Delilah shaved off seven braids of Samson's hair, and he was weak enough to be captured and humiliated by the Philistines. They gouged his eyes and made him perform hard labor. The Philistines had a large festival to celebrate Samson's capture, and people crowded into the temple to ridicule him. Samson was chained to the pillars of the temple as he prayed that God would restore his strength one last time. God answered Samson's prayer, and Samson was able to knock down the temple's pillars, killing all of the Philistine rulers and citizens that were inside. He killed more of his enemies during his last sacrifice than he did in his entire lifetime.
