How do you know when someone is trustworthy?

What attributes and actions can you think of that accompany someone in your life whom you trust? One key factor is promise-keeping.

We know we can trust someone when they do what they say they will do. When they follow through on their words, their actions become relational building blocks.

The same is true with our God.

The most powerful example of His promise-keeping is in the birth of Jesus Christ.

The purpose of this devotional is to align our hearts with Christ and allow Him to prepare us to celebrate His first coming this Christmas season while, at the same time, looking forward with bulletproof hope to His promised second coming.

All of human history is the story of how we were with God, why we walked away, and how God made a way for us to be with Him again. He spoke through prophets about this Way. He fulfilled those prophecies in His first coming. And He will fulfill the final prophecies detailed in Revelation in His Second Coming. So now, we will reflect on His first coming.

A Question to Ponder: Roughly 700 years passed before the prophecies detailed in Isaiah were fulfilled completely in Jesus’ birth. The first near-fulfillment of this promise actually occurred in Isaiah’s lifetime (see Isaiah 8:1-8), then Jesus brought about the complete fulfillment in His birth. How does this inform your perception and perspective of God’s process of keeping the promises He makes?

A Prayer to Pray: God, thank you for keeping your promises. Please align my heart toward You in this Advent season. Open my eyes and tune my spirit to Your Presence in my life today. Increase my confidence in your promise that I will see Jesus face to face one day. Prepare me to celebrate your first coming and fill me with hope in the promise of your second coming. In Jesus’ name and power, I pray, amen.
