JOURNEY WITH a GIANT: Drawing Closer to God

DAY 1 OF 5

STEP BY STEP

In the same way that amateur athletes can improve their game by studying the tactics of seasoned players, we can gain fresh perspectives by journeying with the heroes of faith. As we run the race set for us, our eyes on Jesus—“the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2, NIV)—our spiritual giants help us take our next step…and the next.

Walking with a giant isn’t about worshiping them but about following their example in our own faithfulness to Christ. As Paul urged the Corinthians, “Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1, CSB).

With this in mind, I recently chose to spend time learning about the life of Fred Rogers, known to millions of children as “Mister Rogers.” The book, I’m Proud of You, tells the story of the friendship between Mister Rogers and reporter Tim Madigan, the book’s author. Tim met Mister Rogers because of an article Tim was assigned to write. He flew to Pittsburgh on a Friday to interview Fred and ended up enjoying his company for three days. Fred spent Saturday with Tim and then invited him to church the next morning, where Tim sat with Fred and his family. When it was time for Tim to leave, Fred walked him to his car, expressing how happy he was that they had become friends. As he walked away, Fred turned around with a warm call of “Goodbye” and the “friend” hand motion in sign language. Instead of doing the interview and keeping the reporter at arm’s length, Fred had opened his heart and life.

What resided at the core of Fred Rogers was no secret. If asked to create a tagline for his life, you would likely include words such as unconditional love or kindness. As you hear what people say about Fred, think about what those you know and love might say about you. How do others see you? What characteristics pour from your words and actions during your work and play? Regardless of what others might say about you, what do you want your tagline to be? As God shapes you, may He bring you closer to becoming that person.

How have others who have gone before you in faith shaped what you want your tagline to be?

About this Plan

JOURNEY WITH a GIANT: Drawing Closer to God

One way we can pursue our purpose and deepen our relationship with God is to learn from the “cloud of witnesses” we read about in Hebrews—spiritual giants who have gone before us and stand in heaven cheering us on. Mister Fred Rogers has served as one of those spiritual giants in my life. This week we’ll look at how Mister Rogers’s heart for service can point us back to God.
