Pharaoh submits when all the firstborn die. The ‘passing over’ begins the annual Passover feast. The Hebrews, under God’s direction, start their lunar calendar.

Note: The Jewish calendar was lunar with the new moon starting each month (Psalm 81:3; Isaiah 1:14). About every third year a thirteenth month was added to bring the year more correctly into phase with the sun. When the Hebrews escaped from Egypt God told them to start a new spiritual year from the seventh month (Exodus 12:2). It began with the new moon in March/April with the month Abib, later called Nisan. Their secular calendar began around our September–October with the blowing of trumpets (Leviticus 23:24) on Rosh Hashanah their new year’s day.
