Practical Spiritual Steps

Truth: Regularly replace lies with Scripture. If the enemy says, “you can’t stop,” you reply with, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”(Philippians 4:13). As you gather together multiple verses to meditate on in relation to your specific addiction, also set aside a specific time daily to be consistent.

Confession: Bring sin into the light before God and trusted believers (James 5:16) - those close who will not weaponize your pain but will listen and pray with you and for you.

Surrender: Yield control to the Holy Spirit daily, not just once. As you do, he will direct you to the things that need to be removed from your life, space, etc. Disciplines that must be included in your daily life: fasting, prayer, and worship. You just have to be willing to obey (John 14:26).

Intercession: Walk with others who can help bear the burden (Galatians 6:2). As you work with God on your deliverance, he might direct you to pray for another person going through what you are, or something similar, or worse. Have the compassion to look beyond your own struggles and put theirs into prayer just like Job did (Job 42:10-11).

Thanksgiving: Thank God in the little progress everyday (Psalm 100:4), do not be anxious - it doesn’t happen in a day (Philippians 4:6) - but be grateful for the little beginnings (Zechariah 4:10).
