Day 2: Stillness at Twilight

“He took him outside and said, 'Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.' Then he said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.'" — Genesis 15:5 (NIV)

The final rays of the sun fade beyond the horizon, and twilight settles over the fields. Isaac steps out into the quiet. Another day is ending, one still without an answer. He waits for the return of his servant, for the promise of a bride who will carry forward the covenant of his father Abraham.

If you can imagine the anxious heart of someone waiting for their promised beloved, Isaac’s longing must have been great. Yet instead of pacing or striving, he goes out to meditate—to turn his heart and mind toward God’s promises. Perhaps he moved through the fields, but his soul rested in stillness (Isaiah 26:3).

What a picture of peace in waiting. Isaac chose stillness over distraction, communion over control. In lifting his eyes toward heaven, he aligned the eyes of his heart (Ephesians 1:18) with the God who keeps His word (Joshua 23:14).

In the same way, we fix our gaze on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), who is now seated on the throne above (Hebrews 1:3), watching over us with love (Psalm 33:13–15). Just as Isaac looked up and saw his promised bride approaching, we too lift our eyes toward the second coming of our Beloved, who will return through the clouds (Revelation 1:7) and fulfill His promises at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7–8).

This Advent, may our waiting lead us into stillness of soul. The One who first came as a child in Bethlehem now dwells within us through His Spirit (Romans 8:11). As we look up in hope for His return, let us also look within, embracing the gift and comfort found in the union of His Spirit with ours.
