Why do we doubt the concept of “through God alone”?

Why do we doubt that people can be moved by prayer? Perhaps it is because it does not demonstrate to others how spiritual and important we are, as we cannot claim that we solved the problem or were responsible for the positive results. It may be that we have never witnessed people receiving answers and solutions “through prayer alone.” It could also mean we have never been desperate enough, never reached such an end of ourselves that we realised our utter helplessness and inability, knowing that only an intervention from God can turn the situation around. For others, perhaps they believe that prayer alone is not “strong enough” to change the circumstances.

Too often, we think we must pray powerful prayers—and then we try to “pray powerful prayers.” In one sense, we can say that there is no power in prayer itself. The power lies in the One to whom we pray. Even the weakest believer, praying the feeblest of prayers with faith as small as a mustard seed and calling upon God for help, will undoubtedly receive answers from Him.

Derek Prince recounts how he and a dozen intercessors once went to Israel to pray regarding the ongoing conflicts with Islam, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other situations causing unrest in the region.

One team member suddenly became very ill—so ill that he felt unable to pray. Derek asked the Lord why He had allowed this to happen. Here he was with a team of intercessors, and now one of them lay in bed, unable to contribute.

He sensed the Lord telling him: “The problems in the Middle East are far greater than your prayers can solve—and the gap is growing daily.” In effect, God was saying that their focus was on the power of their prayers rather than on a deep dependence on the power of God Almighty.

This incident gave him a new perspective on prayer and helped him understand that our prayers are not as powerful as we sometimes think. The power lies in God, who answers prayer. It is in our total helplessness that God comes and performs His greatest works.
