මෙකල යේසුස්වහන්සේගේ කීර්තිය පිළිබඳව හෙරෝද් ප්‍රාන්ත රජුට අසන්ට ලැබුණේ ය. තම මෙහෙකරුවන් ඇමතූ ඔහු, “මේ යොහන් බව්තීස්ත ය; ඔහු මරණින් නැගිට ඇතැයි ද, හාස්කම් බලය ඔහු තුළ ක්‍රියා කරන්නේ එනිසා යැ” යි පැවසී ය. මන්ද හෙරෝද්, තම සහෝදරයා වූ පිලිප්ගේ භාර්යාව වූ හෙරෝදියස් නිසා, යොහන් අල්ලා බැඳ, සිරගත කරනු ලැබ තිබිණ. එසේ වූයේ, “ඇය තියා ගැනීම නිත්‍යානුකූල නැතැ” යි යොහන් ඔහුට කියා තිබූ බැවිණි. ඔහු මරා දැමීමට වුවමනා වුව ද, ඔහු දිවැසිවරයෙකැයි ජනයා සැලකූ නිසා, හෙරෝද් ඔවුනට බය වූයේ ය. එහෙත් හෙරෝද්ගේ උපන් දිනය පැමිණි කල, හෙරෝදියස්ගේ දියණිය, පිරිස ඉදිරියේ නැටුමක් නටා, හෙරෝද් ප්‍රීතියට පත් කළෙන්, ඇය ඉල්ලන කවරක් වුව දෙන්නට හෙරෝද් ඇයට දිවුරුමකින් පොරොන්දු විය. තම මව විසින් පොලඹවන ලද ඈ, “යොහන් බව්තීස්තගේ හිස තැටියක ලා, මට මෙහි ගෙනත් දෙන්නැ” යි කීවා ය. රජු ඉන් දැඩි සිත් තැවුලට පත් වුව ද, තම දිවුරුම් නිසාත්, තමා සමඟ සිටි අමුත්තන් නිසාත් එය දීමට අණ කොට, සිර ගෙදරට යවා, යොහන්ගේ හිස ගසවාලී ය. ඔහුගේ හිස තැටියක තබා ගෙනැවිත්, දැරියට දෙන ලදී. ඈ එය තම මව වෙත ගෙන ගියා ය. ඔහුගේ ගෝලයෝ පැමිණ, ඔහුගේ දේහය ගෙන ගොස්, එය වළලා, ඉන්පසු යේසුස්වහන්සේට එපවත් දැන්වූහ.
