යේසුස්වහන්සේ යොහන්ට වඩා ගෝලයින් දිනා බව්තීස්ම කරතියි පරිසිවරුන්ට සැල විය. (එහෙත් ඇත්තෙන් ම බව්තීස්ම කළෝ යේසුස්වහන්සේ නො ව ගෝලයෝ ය.) උන්වහන්සේ ඒ වග දැන, යුදයෙන් පිට වී, යළි ගලීලයට ගිය සේක. ඒ ගමන යා යුතු වූයේ සමාරිය මැදිනි. යාකොබ් සිය පුත් යෝසෙප්ට දුන් බිම් කොටස අසල පිහිටි සිකාර් නම් සමාරි නගරයට උන්වහන්සේ පැමිණි සේක. යාකොබ්ගේ ළිඳ එහි විය; ගමනින් විඩාවට පත් ව සිටි යේසුස්වහන්සේ ළිඳ අසල හිඳගත් සේක. ඒ හය වන පැය පමණ විය. සමාරියේ ස්ත්‍රියක් දිය අදින්නට එහි ආවා ය. ඈ ඇමතූ යේසුස්වහන්සේ, “මට බොන්නට දෙන්නැ” යි කී සේක. උන්වහන්සේගේ ගෝලයෝ කෑම ගෙනෙන්නට කඩ මණ්ඩියට ගොස් සිටියහ. එවිට සමාරීය ස්ත්‍රිය, “යුදෙව්වකු වූ ඔබ, සමාරීය ළඳක් වන මගෙන් වතුර ඉල්ලන්නේ කොහොම දැ?” යි උන්වහන්සේගෙන් ඇසුවා ය. (ඒ, එකල යුදෙව්වරුන්, සමාරියයන් හා ඇයි-හොඳයියක් නො පැවැත් වූ බැවිනි.) යේසුස්වහන්සේ ඇය අමතමින්, “දෙවියන්වහන්සේ ඔබට පිළිගන්වන දීමනාව කුමක් ද කියාත්, ඔබෙන් දිය ඉල්ලන්නේ කවුරුන් ද කියාත් ඔබ දැන සිටියා නම්, ඔහුගෙන් ඉල්ලන්නේ ඔබයි. එවිට ඔහු ඔබට ජීවන දිය දෙන්නට තිබුණා” යි කී සේක. එකල ඈ, “මහත්මයා, කෝ! දිය අදින්නට කිසිවක් ඔබට නැහැ; ළිඳත් ගැඹුරුයි; ඒ ජීවන දිය ඔබ ලබා ගන්නේ කොහෙන් ද? අපේ ආදි පියා වූ යාකොබ්ටත් වඩා ඔබ ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ ද? මේ ළිඳ අපට දුන්නේ ඔහුයි; ඔහුත් මෙයින් බීවා; ඔහුගේ පුත්‍රයිනුත්, ගව, එළු, බැටළු රංචුත් මෙයින් බීවා” යි කීවා ය. යේසුස්වහන්සේ පිළිතුරු දෙමින්, “මේ වතුර බොන හැම කෙනකුට නැවත පිපාස දැනේ; එනමුත්, මා දෙන දිය බොන කෙනකුට නැවත පිපාසය ඇති නො වේ. මා දෙන දිය බොන ඇත්තන් තුළ සදාතන ජීවන උල්පත් මැවෙන්නේ යැ” යි පැවසූ සේක. එවිට ඈ, “අනේ මටත් ඒ වතුර දෙන්න; එවිට ආයෙත් මට පිපාස වන්නේවත්, දිය අදින්නට මෙහි එන්නට වන්නේවත් නෑ” යි උන්වහන්සේට කීවා ය.
