The Word is Your Life

John 10:10 “…I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

In the New Testament, three Greek words are used to define life: Zoe, Psuche, and Bios. Psuche is life as it is in the soul of man. Bios is life as it has to do with the physical body. Zoe is life in the spirit of the recreated man. Zoe is the God-kind of life, the nature of God.

When Jesus spoke these words in John 10:10, he was not speaking about Psuche or Bios. He was referring to Zoe - the divine, eternal, inexhaustible life of God. This is the life that Jesus came to give man. Zoe is also the same word used in John 5:26, “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.” So, the life that God has is Zoe, and this is the same life that He has given to everyone who believes in Jesus.

When you were born again, your spirit was recreated with the life of God. While life in your soul is fed with natural knowledge, and life in your body is fed with natural food, life in your spirit is fed with the Word of God. The life in your spirit can only be nourished and expressed by the Word of God. Jesus made this clear in Matthew 4:4 when He said, “…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Jesus was not diminishing the necessity of natural food; He was announcing a higher order of life that is sustained, energized and governed by God’s Word.

As a child of God, having the life of God in you, you cannot grow if you do not live by the Word of God. God’s Word is life; it is YOUR LIFE. It is the very substance by which your life is built and sustained. Hence, you must live, not just by natural substance, but by divine substance – the substance of God’s Word.
