Praying for the Harvest

DAY 1 OF 7

Prepare the Soil

Jesus loved to use every day agricultural metaphors to communicate deep spiritual realities. He tells a story that every farmer and gardener appreciates: You cannot have a harvest without the planting of seed!

The seed is spread and the soil responds. Growth is based on the condition of the soil. It’s a simple picture, yet it carries a profound truth:

"The harvest depends on the condition and receptiveness of the soil."

The seed is always good. God’s Word is powerful and effective. But the soil of the heart, impacts the fruitfulness of the seed. Some heart soil is hardened by disappointment or sin. Some is shallow and fickle, unable to sustain and encourage growth. Some is crowded and choked with thorns such as, distractions, anxieties, and competing loves. And some soil, by God’s grace, is fertile, tilled and ready.

God advances His harvest by preparing the hearts of His people. Renewal begins not with activity but with availability. Soil is prepared through the challenges and changes of life accompanied by humility, repentance, responsiveness and attentiveness. As we allow God to work in us, we become people who not only receive His Word but carry it with integrity and compassion.

But Jesus’ parable also pushes us outward. The Farmer is still sowing. God is at work in the unseen soil of hearts across our neighbourhoods, workplaces, schools, and communities. Long before we speak a word, he is softening, stirring, and preparing. Our role is not to judge the soil but to join the Sower in scattering seed generously, trusting God with the growth.

Reflection Question

Where is God inviting you to let Him prepare your heart, and where is He prompting you to join Him in sowing seed in your community?

Call to Action

Spend ten minutes in silence today. Ask the Spirit to reveal anything in your heart that needs to be surrendered and ask Him to show you one person in your community whose heart He is already preparing.

Prayer

Lord, prepare my heart. Make me good soil. Open my eyes to the people around me in whom You are already at work. Help me sow faithfully and trust You for the harvest. Amen

About this Plan

Praying for the Harvest

The fields are white, and the Lord of the Harvest is calling. This seven-day devotional invites you to labor alongside the Holy Spirit for our communities, and nation. Throughout the week, we shift our perspective from seeing obstacles to seeing a plentiful harvest that needs our focused intercession. Each day features a scriptural focus, a reflection question, a tangible action, and a prayer to activate the mission. Let's fix our eyes on eternity and ask the Father to raise up workers for His Kingdom.
