Rebel: Following Jesus When the World Walks the Other Way

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: Let’s Make Jesus Our Priority

I have many days that are filled from morning to night with important tasks, interviews, rehearsals, etc. I bet you can relate. Some days I feel overwhelmed and jump right into the long list of what I need to get done, one after the other, until I fall into bed exhausted at night. I don’t like days like that. Maybe I did tick every item off my list . . . but my list was flawed from the start.

I have learned that the more overwhelmed I feel, the more desperately I need time with God first. Not that I always succeed, but I’m learning. And one thing that can help is a list (or three). It helps me to pause and remember my priorities not just for that day, but for life. I write down two to three nonnegotiable, “have-to-do” items. After that, I make a list of “want-to-do” tasks that won’t cause the end of the world if they get pushed to tomorrow. Finally, if there’s time, I list “wish-to-do” items that would be great to accomplish or only matter if I have spare time. I start with God and submit my lists to Him. They mean nothing if the items on them aren’t even in His plan for me that day (or ever!).

It also helps to remember what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (esv). Jesus isn’t saying we will automatically get material blessings. He’s saying not to worry about even the most basic things like clothing or food because, when we put God first, He will provide everything we need.

How about you? Do you prioritize your days so that you accomplish what matters most? It won’t just happen on its own. We must be intentional and determined, saying no to other things so we can focus on the one thing. So make that nonnegotiable “have-to-do” list, my friend, and let the rest fall around it. That may feel a little scary, but I promise it will be okay, because Jesus promises to be right there with you in it.

Prayer:

Lord God, thank You for this good reminder that You are my provider, the one who meets my needs (and more!) as I place You first in my life. Amen.

About this Plan

Rebel: Following Jesus When the World Walks the Other Way

The world in its darkness entices us to chase after things that do not last—fame, beauty, success, influence, wealth, and more. But Jesus teaches us to walk the other way, to rebel against the cultural tide and follow Him and the timeless truth of Scripture. Let’s look at five aspects of living as a“rebel” for Jesus and trusting God to provide all that we need, and more.
