Introduction: The Light Belongs to God

Before the sun existed, God brought light into being through His word. Before any human eye had opened, light was already present, already moving, already entirely His. Scripture does not begin with the triumph of darkness. It begins with God speaking, and the first thing He speaks is light.

This sequence is not accidental; it is theological. Light is not something God created for His own use and then simply handed over to others. Light is an expression of who He is. As John writes clearly:

God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

This is the first thing to understand before reading any of the stories in this series, because each woman portrayed carried something that did not originate in herself. The light was His before it was theirs. They were carriers, not sources. This distinction is the central point of everything.

Scripture uses the image of light in several ways, and all of them appear at some point in this series.

• Light is the visible presence of God: the burning bush, the glory that filled the tabernacle, the face of Moses as he came down from the mountain.
• It is the Word of God: the lamp for our feet, the truth that reveals what we cannot see on our own.
• It is the life of God breaking into human circumstances. In John 1, life and light are not two separate things.
• And it is testimony: the quality of a human life lived faithfully before others in such a way that the character of God becomes visible to people who otherwise would not see Him.

All these forms converge in Jesus, who is the Word made flesh, the full radiance of the Father, the One in whom every expression of divine light reaches its fullness.

The women portrayed in this series carried this light before it reached that fullness. Some of them carried a promise not yet fulfilled. Others carried the knowledge of a God who sees, who hears, or who preserves what we entrust to Him. A few carried the written Word itself, bringing it to people who needed to receive it. None of them had a complete view of the whole picture. They were faithful with what had been entrusted to them in their own time, and because of that, the story moved forward.

Several of them are not named in Scripture. The Bible records what they did and then continues without telling us what to call them. This is not an oversight. It is a statement about the nature of the light God entrusts to people. It is not reserved for the prominent or the recognized. It goes wherever He sends it, through whoever is willing to carry it, whether history takes note of it or not.

When Jesus told His followers that they were the light of the world, He was not asking them to produce something from themselves. He was declaring what they already were because of their connection to Him. The light was His. Their calling was simply to stop hiding it and to carry it in such a way that those who watched them would glorify not the carrier, but the Father who is in heaven.

That calling now rests on you, and it comes with far more than was given to any of these women. Today, you have the complete Word of God. You possess the full testimony of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The Spirit of God dwells in you. You are sealed with the seal of God. What many of these women carried as a partial light still in motion, you now hold in its fullness. The question this devotional series raises is not whether God has given you something to carry. He already has. The question is whether you are carrying it and allowing it to go beyond you.

Carrying the Light

Matthew 5 does not say that light belongs to the eloquent or to the theologically trained. It says that it belongs to you right now in the present stage of your life, while you carry whatever God has placed in your hands today. The women in this series did not carry the light because their circumstances were clear or because their role was recognized. They carried it through barrenness and exile, through massacres and floods, across a thousand miles of open sea while delivering a letter, and during six years of hiding a child in a room.

The bowl that covers the light, against which Jesus warns, is not always fear of public scrutiny. Sometimes it is the quiet conviction inside that what you are carrying is not significant enough to matter.

When the light you carry makes God visible to someone watching your life, the goal is not for that person to walk away impressed with your faithfulness or performance. The goal is exactly what Jesus said: that they would see and glorify your Father who is in heaven. The light was never yours to keep. It was given to you so that you would bring it to someone else.

God advances His story through people whose names the world never learns, whose contributions history never credits, but whose faithfulness eternity never forgets. They carried a partial light toward a fulfillment they could not see, and everything toward which they were moving arrived fully and finally in Jesus Christ.

You now stand on the other side of all of this, holding the complete Word.

Ask yourself this: Am I taking the Word of God as seriously as the women who possessed only a fragment of it? And am I allowing it to shine in a way that glorifies the God who entrusted it to me?

• Scripture describes light as the presence of God, His Word, His life, and the testimony of a faithful life. Which of these aspects do you think about most naturally?
• Matthew 5 says that light shines so that others may glorify your Father who is in heaven, not so that they admire the one who carries it. In your own life, where is it most difficult to maintain the boundary between carrying God's light and drawing attention to yourself?

Prayer

Father, open my eyes to Your Word. Allow me to learn from it, to be shaped by it, and to carry it faithfully into the lives around me. Let Your light shine through me, not my own. Show me what form of light You have called me to carry, and keep my hands open enough to hold it only for Your glory. In the name of Jesus, the Word made flesh. Amen.
