Welcome to Holy Week

DAY 1 OF 8

What kind of king rides into town on a donkey?

Jesus shows His kingdom is built on humility and service—not power.

There is an important backstory to know about Palm Sunday. As Jesus enters Jerusalem, we begin to see that His kingdom looks very different from what anyone expected.

Why did he arrive on a donkey?

Why did the people wave palm branches?

In Jesus’ day, palm branches were used to honor kings and military leaders returning from battle. The Jewish people, who had long awaited freedom from Roman rule, may have had this symbolism in mind. Many of those lining the streets likely celebrate the arrival of their “anointed one,” the chosen savior, Christ.

Another group present was the zealots — religious extremists committed to violently overthrowing Roman rule in the name of their only King, Yahweh.

Family Conversation Starter:

  • Since He is King, why do you think Jesus chose a donkey as his ride instead of a strong horse or a big elephant?
  • What does a servant heart look like and how can we practice that kind of mindset (heart posture) starting this week?
  • Read the Parable of the Wicked Tenants together (Luke 20:9-18) and discuss how it applies to God’s plan in Jesus.
  • Why do you think we want Jesus to “fix” things our way instead of surrendering to His way?
