Worship: Turning Data Into DevotionSample

Day 1: Turning Data into Devotion?
While driving down the highway, I noticed a huge billboard sign that read, "turn data into devotion." Honestly, I was taken aback. Initially, it struck me as odd, and deeply concerned me as I pondered society's relationship with technology. The phrase on the sign prompted me to raise a question: Has our love for technology been so skewed that a company would be so bold to introduce the concept of turning data into devotion?"
The phrase lingered in my mind as I continued driving down the highway toward my next destination. And then I made some connections... If data, which consists of factual information, including both quantitative (statistics, numbers) and qualitative (insights, experiences), were viewed through a biblical lens, could it be possible to transform our factual experiences with God into our heartfelt devotion to Him?
As I pondered, I thought of David, a man after God's own heart, and his words in Psalm 139. This chapter profoundly illustrates David's recognition of God's presence in His life. He not only recounts God's love but transforms it into worship and gratitude. In it, David recounts what he knows about God and what God thinks of him.
Based on David's data, he recognized that God knew him, his actions, and his thoughts. He acknowledged that God understood him intricately, even knowing his words before they were spoken. David knew of God's protection whether he did well or fell short—regardless of the circumstances. David acknowledged that God guided him wherever he was, in darkness or in light, no matter the condition. He knew that God created him to be fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every part of him even before David had discovered these things about himself. David knew God's thoughts about him were countless and that God was always with him, whether he was awake or asleep.
Each of us possesses our own "data points" from our lives. If we are willing to capture these moments of joy, struggle, mercy, grace, and divine intervention that reflect God’s work in our lives, we too can turn our data into devotion to God.
Reflection Moment:
As you read Psalm 139, pay special attention to the similarities you see between your own life and David's life.
