Journey to ChristmasSample

The Gift of a Wonderful Counsellor
As the Christmas season begins and Advent arrives, many of us feel a familiar tension. There is joy in the lights, music, and traditions, but also pressure as calendars fill and expectations rise. Christmas is often called “the most wonderful time of the year,” and yet for many, stress quietly accompanies the celebration. There are choices to make, uncertainty to manage, and questions about what lies ahead - not only through Christmas, but into the new year.
Into this space, Scripture speaks words that were first declared hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming Messiah and described who He would be. These words were foundational at the first Christmas and remain foundational today. Isaiah declares, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” This is not a distant event or a general truth - it is deeply personal. This child was born for us.
Isaiah goes on to name the Messiah: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These are not symbolic titles or honorary labels. They describe the very nature and work of Jesus. This Christmas season invites us to sit with one of those names - Wonderful Counsellor.
To call Jesus our Wonderful Counsellor is to say that He offers more than advice. In the original language, the word “wonderful” carries the sense of miraculous and marvellous, while “counsellor” means one who brings wisdom, direction, and guidance. Jesus is the miraculous adviser who never gets it wrong. His counsel is always right, always wise, and always purposeful.
Understanding Jesus in this way should change how we live. When we allow Him to guide us, we are not left guessing or navigating life alone. We are invited to trust the One whose wisdom is perfect and whose direction leads to life. This is the gift of Christmas: not just a celebration, but the presence of a Wonderful Counsellor who walks with us.
