A Life That Matters: A 7-Day Devotional From 2 TimothySample

A Legacy of Encouragement
Imagine the emotions Paul must have experienced as he penned his final letter to Timothy, a young man into whom he had poured his life. Paul probably felt a mixture of sadness and joy: sadness that this would be his final letter to Timothy before he left his earthly home, and joy in knowing Timothy was ready to take the baton and continue the ministry Paul had been preparing him for.
Paul was Timothy’s spiritual father and wanted to encourage him in his faith and ministry. He modeled a life that matters as he came alongside Timothy.
In 2 Timothy 1:1–7, Paul began his letter with words of encouragement. He expressed his love for Timothy, prayed for him, exhorted him, affirmed him, and reminded him of all that was available to him in Christ.
Words of affirmation can go a long way in encouraging someone. I believe in you. You’ve got this. Great job. I love you. Those words give a bounce in our step and confidence to move forward. We all face moments when we feel unworthy, alone, inadequate, or afraid to step out of our comfort zone. Will we be sensitive to those around us who need a word of encouragement? Perhaps our words of greeting and confidence will be exactly what they need at that specific time.
A Time of Reflection
How do Paul’s words encourage you today?
How can you encourage those God has placed in your life? How are you spurring them on in their faith?
A Time of Prayer
Ask God to show you someone you can encourage today. Take a moment to pray for those around you whom you can build into and help grow spiritually.
Father, thank You for the ones You’ve placed in my life who have challenged me to press on in my walk with You. Thank You for those You’ve given me to encourage and come alongside. Help me keep my eyes fixed on You and point others to You.
