I AM... Being RefinedSample

Refinement Is Not Punishment
“He knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” – Job 23:10 NIV
When life becomes difficult, many of us assume we must have done something wrong. Pain has a way of turning inward, raising quiet questions about failure, mistakes, or God’s displeasure. Difficulties often feel like correction, even when no clear cause can be named.
Scripture offers a different starting point. The Bible does not describe refinement as punishment. It describes it as a process God uses with people He knows and values. Job spoke these words from the middle of suffering, not from understanding or relief. He did not claim to know why he was being tested. What he trusted was that God knew the way he was taking.
Refinement begins with this shift in perspective. Difficulty is not proof that God has turned away. It is not evidence that faith has failed. God does not refine what He intends to discard. He refines what matters.
This does not make pain easy, and it does not explain every hardship. It does, however, remove the burden of self-blame. Instead of asking what you did wrong, refinement invites a different question.
What might God be doing, even here?
This first step matters. Until hardship is no longer interpreted as punishment, it is difficult to see what God may be forming through it. Reframing pain does not solve it, but it creates space for trust to grow.
Prayer
God, when life feels hard, help me not to assume I am being punished. You know the way I take, even when I do not understand it. Give me grace to trust Your work in this season and courage to stay open to what You are doing. Amen.

About this Plan

Being refined by God can feel confusing and even uncomfortable, yet it is often a sign of His care rather than His absence. This series invites you to pause and consider what God may be shaping in you through seasons of pressure and waiting. These reflections are meant to help you remain open, patient, and hopeful as God works quietly and faithfully beneath the surface of your life.
