Everyday in Psalms—Expositional Reflections on Each Psalm (Psalm 1-30)

DAY 1 OF 50

INTRODUCING EVERYDAY IN PSALMS

The Psalms, derived from the Greek word Psalmoi (meaning "songs sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument") and the Hebrew title of the book is from the word Tehillim (meaning "praises"), are a collection of 150 poetic compositions inspired by God and used for worship, reflection, and instruction. They are primarily attributed to King David, though there were other contributors. They were integral to temple worship, led by the Levites, who were tasked with singing and playing instruments. The Psalms were sung or chanted during sacrifices, festivals, daily temple rituals, processions, coronations, and times of national crises.

It is fascinating to observe the canonical arrangement of Scripture: the book of Job, filled with profound debates, dark gloominess, and the deep travails of brother Job, is immediately followed by the book of Psalms—a book of praise. This is no coincidence. We are brought from the depths of arguments and afflictions to the heights of worship. From gloominess to joy, from heart-searching questions to heart-rendering worship, this transition reminds us of God’s design. James spoke of this truth: "Is anyone afflicted? Let him pray. Is anyone merry? Let him sing psalms" (James 5:13).

The Psalms capture the full spectrum of human emotion—questions, troubles, and the travails of men. The beauty of the Psalms lies in their honesty. They do not shy away from life’s hardest questions. Instead, they model how to bring those questions to God in faith, hope, and worship. The psalmists did not take their struggles to the streets of men or the intellectual hills of Areopagus. Instead, they brought their hearts to the Lord, pouring them out in His house and in His presence.

Perhaps you are walking through a “Job moment” right now—burdened with questions, challenges, and pain. Why not take a step further? Open another page of your Bible to join the chariot of Prayer and Praise. Move beyond the endless debates and reasoning of this world. Lift your heart to the Lord.

Join me daily as we drink from the wells of the Book of Psalms.
