The Art of Racing in the Rain
The Art of Racing in the Rain premiered in 2019, and it is a powerful story about the presence of a dog in a family filled with hardship and the need to persevere. Denny, a struggling racer, adopted Enzo as a puppy, and the two grow up together as their lives revolve around racing. Denny teaches racing, watches racing films, and races in different sportscar events, waiting for his big break. Later on, he meets his future wife, Eve, and they have a daughter together. As they struggle to make ends meet and keep his racing career alive, Denny and Enzo discover that Eve has brain cancer. Unfortunately, she loses her battle, and Denny is struggling to raise their daughter, Zoe, and continue making a living through racing. His constant companion is Enzo, and through a myriad of other challenges, Enzo stays constant, up until his final breath.
Enzo’s presence and constance in the midst of Denny, Eve, and Zoe’s struggles reminds me of God’s presence through every step of our lives. In Psalms 46:1, the psalmist tells us that God is our refuge and is always ready to help us during troubling times. In Deuteronomy 31, Moses encourages the Israelites as they were entering a time of uncertainty by reminding them that God will never leave them or forsake them. Enzo was the faithful presence in the Swift family, and God is our faithful presence through the ups and downs in life. He never changes, and so we can count on him through everything.
Whether you are in a great season of life or a challenging one, God is with you every step of the way. Does the trajectory of your life sound similar to Denny’s? Just as Enzo was with him through the ups and downs, God is with you. God is faithful, powerful, and present through all of your joys and sorrows. We can take comfort in this. In the end, Denny’s life turned around, and he had a great future ahead for him and his daughter. Through our sufferings, God is renewing us and preparing us for a future filled with renewal and hope too. If we are his followers, we have the promise of eternal life and eternal joy with him, and we know that he works things out for our good. Have you trusted God in every season?
