Lessons in Life

DAY 1 OF 5

Life is a collection of moments that quietly shape who we become—some joyful, others painful, many unexpected. Along the way, God uses everyday experiences to teach timeless truths if we are willing to pause, reflect, and listen.

Lessons in Life is a five-day devotional drawn from real-life stories and grounded in Scripture. Each day invites you to reflect on practical lessons about character, relationships, self-control, legacy, and growth—lessons learned not in isolation, but in the ordinary rhythms of life.

This plan is designed to help you see God’s wisdom at work in everyday situations and encourage you to live with intention, faith, and purpose. As you read, reflect, and pray, may these lessons inspire you to grow deeper in your walk with God and wiser in your daily living.

DAY 1 — REACTION

A few years ago, I was traveling to the U.S. for a family reunion. My original flight from Lagos via Heathrow was canceled that morning and rescheduled for the next day. When I finally arrived at the airport, I collected my reissued boarding passes without carefully checking them and headed straight for the plane, assuming nothing had changed.

We arrived in London on time. Like most passengers from the rescheduled flight, I rushed toward the connection gate for the 9:00 p.m. flight to JFK. But when the gate agent—a calm, elderly Pakistani gentleman—looked at my boarding pass, he informed me it was actually for 9:00 a.m. the next morning, not that night.

I was stunned. My brother was already planning to pick me up. Another delay felt impossible to accept. Everyone around me erupted—shouting, demanding answers, and venting frustration at a man who wasn’t even responsible. I joined the chaos. The agent eventually ignored the commotion altogether.

But in the middle of the noise, I heard the Lord speak clearly to my heart: “Why don’t you change your approach?”

Convicted, I walked back calmly and said, “Sir, please, I really need to be on this flight tonight. Is there anything you can do to help?” He paused, looked at me, and said, “Kindly stand aside for a little while.”

Ten minutes later, when the plane was nearly full, he asked for my passport. After a call with the cabin crew, he looked up and said something I will never forget: “There are no more seats in economy, but if you don’t mind, I’ve upgraded you to business class.”

I ran to board the plane, arrived in New York that night, and, miraculously, my luggage arrived too.

That day, God taught me one of the most important lessons of my life:

  1. Never follow a raging crowd.
  2. In tense moments, step back. Pause. Think.
  3. Your reaction can open or close doors.

When others are losing control, the child of God must choose wisdom over emotion.

Bible Reading

  • Ecclesiastes 7:9 (NLT) — “Control your temper, for anger labels you a fool.”
  • Proverbs 15:1 (NIV) — “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
  • James 1:19–20 (ESV) — “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Reflect

  • When was the last time your reaction made a situation worse—or better?
  • What would change if you paused before responding?
  • How is God inviting you to handle pressure differently?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond with wisdom, not emotion. Help me stay calm when frustration rises and choose grace over anger. Guide my words, my tone, and my attitude so that my reactions honor You. Amen.
