Sarah: From waiting to wonder

Sarah’s story is one of patience, faith and God’s faithfulness (Genesis 11–21). God promised her a child, yet the promise seemed impossible. Years passed and, humanly speaking, she was well beyond childbearing age. She experienced doubt, incredulity and deep longing. At one point, trying to help God’s plan along, Sarah gave her maidservant Hagar to Abraham to bear a child (Genesis 16:1–2). This decision led to tension and consequences, yet God’s plan prevailed.

Even amid her missteps, God remained faithful. In His perfect timing, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac, the child of promise. Her story reminds us that God’s timing is never too early or too late – it’s always perfect. Human solutions may falter, but God’s vision stretches across eternity and will not fail.

Like Sarah, we may laugh, question or feel weary during seasons of waiting. Even in doubt or delay, God’s promises are unshakable. He is faithful to bring about His plan despite our attempts to rush or solve things ourselves. Sarah’s journey teaches us that faith is not about perfection but about trust. Her laughter, doubts, and even her attempts to take matters into her own hands, did not derail God’s purposes. In the end, His promises were fulfilled in ways far beyond human expectation, and Isaac’s birth marked the unfolding of God’s covenant with Abraham and all his descendants – a testimony that nothing is too hard for the Lord.
