The Way to a Wise Heart: A 10-Day Focus on Growing a Heart of WisdomSample

"Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge... Proverbs 22:17 (ESV)
I appreciate the two action words in this verse: “incline” and 'apply.'
To incline your ear is also called bowing down your ear. Both phrases mean:
- To lean in to listen carefully,
- Give focused, intentional attention,
- Adopt a posture of openness and teachability,
- Slow down enough to truly hear.
The Hebrew meaning of 'apply' suggests placing, setting, or putting—asking us to set our hearts on God’s knowledge.
These words call us to an intentional response toward God.
The world, however, urges us to turn our attention and affections toward things that lack eternal value, waste our time, or even lead us astray. In our data-driven society, we desperately need wisdom, not just the lure of more information.
The verse is a terrific reminder to give focused attention to God and to set our affections on Him rather than on worldly influences.
Why is this important?
When we focus our attention on Him and set our affections on Him, our hearts align with His, allowing us to enjoy more of God.
Reflect honestly:
Which affections toward the world do you need to realign with God?
How might God be guiding you to incline your ear to His wisdom?
Let's close in prayer:
Lord, help us remember this verse as we navigate a world full of information overload and distractions. Teach us to pause and prioritize You—Your wisdom and knowledge. Encourage us to actively align our hearts' affections with what is important to You. In the name of Christ, Amen.
