The Effort of GraceSample

The Effort of Grace

DAY 1 OF 3

Hebrews 4:11 NIV
“Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.”

Let us make every effort to enter God's rest.

When we focus on our own performance—trying to draw near to God, staying worthy in His sight, or earning His blessings—we fall into the trap of self-righteousness. In other words, we begin living a religion based on our efforts and what we do for God rather than a genuine relationship with God grounded in what His Son has done for us. The apostle Paul urged us to enter God's rest, fixing our eyes on Christ and His finished work on the cross rather than on our own deeds or adherence to rules.

-How do we enter God's rest?

As the Latin phrase puts it—sola fide—by faith alone: simply believing in Christ and His finished work on the cross. This allows us to live under Christ's grace without repeating the same pattern of disobedience seen in the children of Israel. In that context, Israel's disobedience was their failure to believe the good news—the grace of God (Hebrews 4:2).

Reflections: Do you feel a spiritual burden weighing on your shoulders? Do you think God is demanding works from you or freely offering His grace? Do you sense that God is not pleased with you?

Daily Application: The Lord is pleased with you simply because of your faith in Christ (Hebrews 11:6). Pray this today: “Lord, You are pleased with me not because of anything I have done for You, but because of what Christ has done for me.”
