God's Presence in Illness and Suffering: A 10-Day Devotional Plan on How God Meets Us in Challenging Life Circumstances Sample

God's Protection in Illness and Suffering
Let’s focus on the two items mentioned in this verse: the rod and the staff.
They carry deep meaning for those who are ill or suffering.
The verse speaks of God’s protection and care in our suffering.
In ancient times, the “rod” mentioned here was a short club the shepherd used to fend off predators that sought to harm the lamb (that's you and me). Our shepherd fights for us.
The staff is different.
It’s a long, pole-like object with a crook at the end. The shepherd used the staff to gently guide sheep into line, keep them from falling off a cliff, and draw them close so he could care for them.
Jesus is our good shepherd – He’s your good shepherd - and He will protect you with His firm rod, guide you, and draw you close with His staff.
He does that because He cares deeply for your well-being.
So, in your illness or suffering, know that Jesus is your shepherd and that you can “fear no evil” because He is nearby.
Here are a couple of questions to prayerfully consider:
Can you rest for just a moment in the idea that Jesus is, right now, protecting you and caring for you with His rod and staff?
Is there any harm you currently fear, any diagnosis you worry about, that you need to turn over to Him and His care?
Below is a poem I wrote to highlight God's strength and care in those dark moments.
Edge of Darkness
In a field not far away
A boy stood tall as if to say
No matter where I go or tread
I shall prevail, no need for dread
Yet, standing on the edge of dark
Are signs of fear and silence stark
The wicked forest calls beyond
My soul so stirred, it can’t respond
Yet I’m alive you see right now
I have a friend who’s made a vow
He walks beside where ‘er I go
He guides me in the dark below
Though darkness haunts and scares by day
Yet on my part I do not sway
This friend he is a lion so strong
Oh, at His side, do I belong
No man or beast can harm me now
The King doth live and so His crown
He is my friend, where I live free
Where darkness has no grip on me
