The Strength to Continue: A 7 Day Devotional

DAY 1 OF 7

DAY 1 | When Trust Feels Hard

Trust sounds simple until life begins to shake. When everything around us feels uncertain, trusting God can feel more like walking blindfolded than walking by faith. David knew this tension well. After years of running from Saul, he reached a breaking point and said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul.” (1 Samuel 27:1, NKJV) In that single sentence, we hear exhaustion, disappointment, and fear.

David was called, anointed, and victorious in battle, yet now he was tired. He had sung about trusting God, but in this moment, he reasoned within himself and concluded there was “nothing better” than to escape. That’s often where weariness takes us, to a place where we believe survival is better than surrender.

But even in this season of fear, God did not abandon David. The Lord’s faithfulness was not dependent on David’s feelings. While David doubted, God remained near. When David fled, God stayed faithful. He allowed David to rest, to learn, and to see that His promises were not voided by human weakness.

When trust feels hard, God’s patience remains. He knows our limits. He understands our humanity. The key is not to pretend we have perfect faith but to bring our imperfect faith to the One who never fails.

Sometimes the most honest prayer is, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24, NKJV) That confession invites God into our fear. He doesn’t scold us for weakness; He strengthens us in it. Trusting God doesn’t mean you always feel confident. It means you choose to stand on His character when your emotions falter.

If you’re struggling to trust, remember this: God’s track record is flawless. The same God who rescued you before will sustain you again. His Word is the anchor when circumstances shift.

Faith doesn’t erase fear, but it gives fear a place to bow.

This devotional is based on a series of messages from the Refresh Conference (an annual conference for those who serve in ministry). Find out more at therefreshconference.com

Ask Yourself:

What fears or disappointments have made it difficult for you to trust God fully in this season, and how can you bring them honestly before Him today?

Prayer:

Father, You know my heart and the fears that often overwhelm it. I confess that sometimes it is hard to trust You when I do not see answers. Forgive me for the times I lean on my own understanding. Remind me that You are faithful, even when I am fearful. Strengthen my heart to wait on You with confidence. Teach me to say, “I will trust You,” even when I do not understand Your plan. In Jesus’ name, amen.
