Free People: A Study in GalatiansSample

Main Idea: There is only one true gospel—everything else is a counterfeit.
In a world where "your truth" has taken the place of the Truth, Paul’s opening words in Galatians cut through the noise with clarity: the gospel did not originate from men but from God Himself. Paul reminds the church that his message—and his authority—was appointed directly through Jesus Christ.
Why does this matter? Because the source determines the strength of the message. If the gospel were merely human advice, it could change with trends, culture, or preference. But because it comes from God, its message bears life-changing power: Christ gave Himself for our sins to rescue us. Our salvation doesn’t rest on our performance but on God’s will—and that gives us security no counterfeit gospel can offer.
What we see, however, is that the Galatians Paul is preaching to have drifted toward a distorted version of the truth. Counterfeit gospels are appealing because they promise Jesus plus something—comfort, success, approval, or control. They sound spiritual but anything that preaches Jesus plus anything else is a false gospel. That’s why Paul uses such strong language: the gospel is too precious, too powerful, and too costly to be edited.
At the end of this passage, Paul points us to the cure for counterfeit faith—live for God’s approval, not man’s. When we aim for His “well done,” the noise of false gospels loses its pull.
Reflection:
Where might you be tempted to accept a “watered-down” version of the gospel? What is one step you can take this week to seek God’s approval above all else?
