Shattering the DarknessSample

Fear Not
Reflection:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 (ESV)
As adults, we often try to escape the shadow death casts over us by changing our diets, behaviors, and spiritual practices. Those changes can lead to a longer life, but there are no guarantees. Psalm 23:4 states that God, acting as your Shepherd, will guide you with His staff and protect you with His rod through "the valley of the shadow of death.” He'll also light your way through the shadows by carrying a lantern on His staff and lobbing His rod at anything that threatens you.
Wait a minute! When was the last time you saw a rod flying at someone or something that threatened to harm you? That’s unlikely because King David was using figurative language when he wrote this, but there is nothing figurative about God’s protection. Psalm 91:1 promises that “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Some Bible translations suggest that “the valley of the shadow of death” isn’t about physical death, but rather a depressing or difficult situation in our lives. In that case, the Good Shepherd guides and assures us with His love. Whether you face death or a trial in life, the verse goes on to promise that the Good Shepherd won’t leave us alone or afraid in any situation. He’ll always be there right beside you. Count on it! I learned that when I crossed what looked like an actual “valley of the shadow of death” for a job interview.
Application:
Everything you experience goes through the Father’s hands first if you give Him control of your life. It’s as simple as asking for His guidance and then waiting for His direction. If you are uncertain what He’s telling you, spend time reading the Bible, praying, and waiting quietly for His answer. It’s also helpful to ask Him to prevent you from making wrong choices, but be ready for the outcome. Don’t ask if you aren’t prepared to accept His plan. Thankfully, He’ll help you through that, too, if you let Him. He may not help you outrun your shadow—figuratively or literally, but you will face your shadow knowing your Good Shepherd is right beside you.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for never leaving us alone. Your love and light show us the path you want us to take and guide us away from danger. Teach us to follow you closely and trust you.
