WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17Sample

WHERE IS GOD WHEN THE GOOD SUFFER?
Two of the most confusing questions of life are: why do good people suffer, and why does God often appear to remain silent? Having dealt with those questions in his first two chapters, the prophet now turns to find the answer. He finds his answer in the majesty and greatness of God. Surely Habakkuk doubted God, wondering why He would let His people be trampled by the Babylonians? Now he breaks forth in prayer, praise, and joy. Using names for God like Eloah and Yahweh, the prophet also uses the Holy One. Isaiah used this term some 30 times in his book. Interestingly, the unclean spirit in Mark 1 gave this title to Jesus, right before Jesus cast him out of the man!
Like Habakkuk, may we all come to God’s Word and get a fresh glimpse of Who and What God is and come to a place of renewed trust in the One who is truly God!
In our Lukan reading today, we will see the theme of repentance and God’s Kingdom. The passage ends with Jesus’ crying over Jerusalem, who did not repent and therefore, was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans. God’s kingdom is not like the kingdoms of the world. As Jesus said, “Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” May we all be sensitive today to God’s call and be ready!

About this Plan

In this 17th installment of Reading with the People of God, we continue following a lectionary rhythm—Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms. This plan explores the prophetic voices of Micah, Habakkuk, and Isaiah, who confronted kings and warned of coming judgment while pointing to the hope of the Messiah. Alongside these, we'll read from the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, tracing the life of Christ and the birth of the Church. As we read these powerful passages in parallel, may the Spirit shape us and grow us in Christ together.
