Burnout Isn't God's Plan for You: Why God Insists on RestSample

Day 2: God Did the Math—And Took It All Back
When Israel refused to honor God's Sabbath year commands, they probably thought they were getting away with something. Each skipped rest year felt like a smart business decision. Why lose a year of income when you could keep producing?
But God keeps better records than we think.
Over 490 years, Israel owed 70 Sabbath years. Seventy years of rest they had withheld from the land. Seventy years of trust they had refused to demonstrate. Seventy years of obedience they had postponed.
So God, the ultimate accountant, did the math and presented them with the bill: "You owe Me 70 years of rest. I'll take them all at once."
The Babylonian exile wasn't just punishment—it was God reclaiming what His people had withheld. While Israel sat in captivity for 70 years, their land finally got the Sabbath rest it had been denied for centuries.
This reveals something unsettling about God's patience: He doesn't always intervene immediately when we disobey. Sometimes, He lets the consequences accumulate until they demand our full attention. He allows us to think we're getting away with ignoring His commands, while quietly keeping track of what we owe.
Think about the areas where you've been in delayed obedience. Maybe it's the rest you keep postponing, the boundaries you keep crossing, the relationships you keep neglecting, or the health habits you keep ignoring. Each compromise might feel insignificant in the moment, but they accumulate.
God's mercy means He's patient with our disobedience, but His justice means there are always consequences. And sometimes those consequences come not as immediate punishment, but as accumulated correction that forces us to deal with everything we've been avoiding.
Before God has to step in and collect what you owe, why not pay attention to where you've been in delayed obedience? It's better to course-correct voluntarily than to be forced into involuntary correction.
Let's pray: Lord, if I'm behind on obedience in any area of my life, show me gently. I don't want to wait until You have to step in and collect what I owe. Give me the wisdom to see where I've been postponing Your commands and the courage to catch up now.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
