Revive Us, Lord: A 40-Day Journey Through the Gospel of John

DAY 12 OF 40

Jesus is the Bread of Life

Summary

  • After feeding the 5000, the crowd wanted to make Jesus their king so that they could have a constant flow of bread (vv. 14-15).
  • In response, Jesus revealed Himself as the Bread of Life, offering eternal sustenance to those who believed in Him.
  • He challenged the crowd to look beyond their physical needs and seek for the spiritual nourishment He gave.
  • His invitation to “eat His flesh and drink His blood” caused many to stumble, as they failed to grasp its spiritual significance.
  • While many disciples left Him, Peter affirmed that only Jesus had the words of eternal life, demonstrating his unwavering faith in Christ.

Reflect

1. Why do you think Jesus emphasised that believing in Him is the true “work” that God desires (vv.28-29)? Why is having faith in Christ such an important element in a disciple’s life (Hebrews 11:6)?

2. Jesus invited all man to feed on His flesh and drink of His blood. What does it really mean to feed on Him (vv. 53-56)?

3. Reflect on your own life. In what ways have you been “feeding on Him” for spiritual sustenance? How can you deepen your trust in Him even when His ways are often hard to understand?

Watch

Videos used with permission by Michael Hoff

Jesus connected His teaching to the Passover, presenting Himself as the ultimate fulfilment of the bread and blood that bring deliverance and life. Just as the Passover symbolised God’s mercy and salvation for Israel, Jesus embodied a new covenant, offering eternal life through His sacrifice.

Closing Prayer

Ask God to help you trust in Jesus as your source of life and strength, even when you may not understand His ways. Pray for a deeper hunger for His word and a heart open to His truth.

About this Plan

Revive Us, Lord: A 40-Day Journey Through the Gospel of John

For the next 40 days, we’ll journey through the Gospel of John, exploring his first-hand account of Jesus’ life. John gives us a glimpse of what it was like to be with Jesus, revealing who He is and how He reflects the very nature of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus makes bold claims about Himself, not just for people then but for us today. He calls for a response—one that will shape our lives, destiny, and eternal reward. Will we truly believe in Him? Will we follow Him as our Master and Lord to the very end?
