 <div class="label">15</div><div class="s1">The Lord&#8217;s Covenant With Abram</div><div class="p"> 1After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Do not be afraid, Abram.</div><div class="q2">I am your shield,#15:1 Or sovereign</div><div class="q2">your very great reward.#15:1 Or shield; / your reward will be very great&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2But Abram said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit#15:2 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain. my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?&#8221; 3And Abram said, &#8220;You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then the word of the Lord came to him: &#8220;This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.&#8221; 5He took him outside and said, &#8220;Look up at the sky and count the stars&#8212;if indeed you can count them.&#8221; Then he said to him, &#8220;So shall your offspring#15:5 Or seed be.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.</div><div class="p"> 7He also said to him, &#8220;I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8But Abram said, &#8220;Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9So the Lord said to him, &#8220;Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.</div><div class="p"> 12As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13Then the Lord said to him, &#8220;Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, &#8220;To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi#15:18 Or river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates&#8212; 19the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">16</div><div class="s1">Hagar and Ishmael</div><div class="p"> 1Now Sarai, Abram&#8217;s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2so she said to Abram, &#8220;The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.</div><div class="p">When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5Then Sarai said to Abram, &#8220;You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;Your slave is in your hands,&#8221; Abram said. &#8220;Do with her whatever you think best.&#8221; Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.</div><div class="p"> 7The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8And he said, &#8220;Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;I&#8217;m running away from my mistress Sarai,&#8221; she answered.</div><div class="p"> 9Then the angel of the Lord told her, &#8220;Go back to your mistress and submit to her.&#8221; 10The angel added, &#8220;I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11The angel of the Lord also said to her:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;You are now pregnant</div><div class="q2">and you will give birth to a son.</div><div class="q1">You shall name him Ishmael,#16:11 Ishmael means God hears.</div><div class="q2">for the Lord has heard of your misery.</div><div class="q1"> 12He will be a wild donkey of a man;</div><div class="q2">his hand will be against everyone</div><div class="q2">and everyone&#8217;s hand against him,</div><div class="q1">and he will live in hostility</div><div class="q2">toward#16:12 Or live to the east / of all his brothers.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: &#8220;You are the God who sees me,&#8221; for she said, &#8220;I have now seen#16:13 Or seen the back of the One who sees me.&#8221; 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi#16:14 Beer Lahai Roi means well of the Living One who sees me.; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.</div><div class="p"> 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.</div>

 <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1">Isaiah&#8217;s Commission</div><div class="p"> 1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one another:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;</div><div class="q2">the whole earth is full of his glory.&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;Woe to me!&#8221; I cried. &#8220;I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7With it he touched my mouth and said, &#8220;See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, &#8220;Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?&#8221;</div><div class="p">And I said, &#8220;Here am I. Send me!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9He said, &#8220;Go and tell this people:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Be ever hearing, but never understanding;</div><div class="q2">be ever seeing, but never perceiving.&#8217;</div><div class="q1"> 10Make the heart of this people calloused;</div><div class="q2">make their ears dull</div><div class="q2">and close their eyes.#6:9,10 Hebrew; Septuagint &#8216;You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; / you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.&#8217; / 10 This people&#8217;s heart has become calloused; / they hardly hear with their ears, / and they have closed their eyes</div><div class="q1">Otherwise they might see with their eyes,</div><div class="q2">hear with their ears,</div><div class="q2">understand with their hearts,</div><div class="q1">and turn and be healed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Then I said, &#8220;For how long, Lord?&#8221;</div><div class="p">And he answered:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Until the cities lie ruined</div><div class="q2">and without inhabitant,</div><div class="q1">until the houses are left deserted</div><div class="q2">and the fields ruined and ravaged,</div><div class="q1"> 12until the Lord has sent everyone far away</div><div class="q2">and the land is utterly forsaken.</div><div class="q1"> 13And though a tenth remains in the land,</div><div class="q2">it will again be laid waste.</div><div class="q1">But as the terebinth and oak</div><div class="q2">leave stumps when they are cut down,</div><div class="q2">so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">The Sign of Immanuel</div><div class="p"> 1When Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.</div><div class="p"> 2Now the house of David was told, &#8220;Aram has allied itself with#7:2 Or has set up camp in Ephraim&#8221;; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.</div><div class="p"> 3Then the Lord said to Isaiah, &#8220;Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,#7:3 Shear-Jashub means a remnant will return. to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer&#8217;s Field. 4Say to him, &#8216;Be careful, keep calm and don&#8217;t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood&#8212;because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. 5Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah&#8217;s son have plotted your ruin, saying, 6&#8220;Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.&#8221; 7Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;It will not take place,</div><div class="q2">it will not happen,</div><div class="q1"> 8for the head of Aram is Damascus,</div><div class="q2">and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.</div><div class="q1">Within sixty-five years</div><div class="q2">Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people.</div><div class="q1"> 9The head of Ephraim is Samaria,</div><div class="q2">and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah&#8217;s son.</div><div class="q1">If you do not stand firm in your faith,</div><div class="q2">you will not stand at all.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11&#8220;Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12But Ahaz said, &#8220;I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Then Isaiah said, &#8220;Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you#7:14 The Hebrew is plural. a sign: The virgin#7:14 Or young woman will conceive and give birth to a son, and#7:14 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scrolls son, and he or son, and they will call him Immanuel.#7:14 Immanuel means God with us. 15He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste. 17The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah&#8212;he will bring the king of Assyria.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Assyria, the Lord&#8217;s Instrument</div><div class="p"> 18In that day the Lord will whistle for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria. 19They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices in the rocks, on all the thornbushes and at all the water holes. 20In that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River&#8212;the king of Assyria&#8212;to shave your heads and private parts, and to cut off your beards also. 21In that day, a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats. 22And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds and honey. 23In that day, in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,#7:23 That is, about 25 pounds or about 12 kilograms there will be only briers and thorns. 24Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers and thorns. 25As for all the hills once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns; they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.</div>

The girl is not dead but asleep.&#8221; But they laughed at him. 25After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26News of this spread through all that region.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute</div><div class="p"> 27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, &#8220;Have mercy on us, Son of David!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, &#8220;Do you believe that I am able to do this?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, Lord,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> 29Then he touched their eyes and said, &#8220;According to your faith let it be done to you&#8221;; 30and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, &#8220;See that no one knows about this.&#8221; 31But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.</div><div class="p"> 32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, &#8220;Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34But the Pharisees said, &#8220;It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Workers Are Few</div><div class="p"> 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, &#8220;The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.&#8221;</div>

Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in#6:23 Or through Christ Jesus our Lord.</div>

But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.</div><div class="p"> 4So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5For when we were in the realm of the flesh,#7:5 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit. the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. 6But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.</div><div class="s1">The Law and Sin</div><div class="p"> 7What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, &#8220;You shall not covet.&#8221;#7:7 Exodus 20:17; Deut. 5:21 8But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. </div>
