DAY 349 OF 365

Recent surveys of students reveal they feel entitled to good grades, even if they fail to do the work. Some experts trace this attitude to Dr. Spock and Mr. Rogers. They say these two convinced students and parents that kids were super-special, so youths today demand special treatment. Whether Dr. Spock and Mr. Rogers are the cause or not, one thing is clear: many youths feel they are entitled to what they want and often break rules to get it. This sounds like people the Apostle Paul described in his letter to the Philippians. He referred a group of people whose "god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth." Sadly, this too often describes people who profess faith in Christ. They want the benefits of their faith but deny it by the way they live. Paul says Christians belong to two worlds. Physically, we live and function on earth, but if we forget our heavenly identity, the culture will draw us into its orbit. When that happens, we become powerless to engage and influence our culture. God's people are citizens of heaven where the Lord Jesus lives. One day He will return to reward us for our faithfulness to Him. Until then, God's people should resist the urge to demand what is not rightfully theirs. Instead of focusing exclusively on self, we should honor God by seeking justice for others.
