7 Bible Questions and Answers for Families

DAY 5 OF 7

What does the Bible say about our use of media (video games, movies, television, social media)?

Video games and movies didn’t exist during biblical times, yet Scripture can still inform our use of modern media. It’s important to recognize that video games, movies, television, and social media are forms of communication and art. They both inform culture and form culture, reflect both what is happening and shape what happens in the future, and can be used for both good and evil. It’s up to us to address them from a biblical worldview. We don’t advocate that people throw away their devices, but at times, we need to set limits to protect our hearts.

Evaluate the content: Ask yourself, If Jesus were in the room, would he watch this video or show with me? If the answer is no, we recommend reevaluating what you’re watching. Ultimately, God is with you whether you are aware of it or not. Consider using filters to block violence and pornography. If you have children, you are also responsible for guarding what and how much they see and hear. Always remember that your children look to you for how to consume media in a God-honoring way.

Consider how your use of media affects others: The amount of time and energy we invest in media consumption can keep us from other areas God wants us to pursue, including building relationships and serving others. Our media usage may also distract others, especially if we use our devices in public spaces with loud volumes or flashing lights. Consider time limits regarding how long you use your devices.

Prioritize the people physically with you: Portable devices make it convenient to play games and watch videos at any time, even during meals. It’s sad to see a family eating together at a restaurant when every person is on a device without talking to one another. Choose to invest your attention in those with you and watch how God uses the time together to grow your in-person relationships.

Take a break: Did you know that practicing Jews today turn off all their devices when observing the Sabbath? It seems like a radical move, but it offers a powerful example of the need to take regular breaks from our media to focus on the Lord.

If you’re overwhelmed by the media you or those in your family are consuming, try some of these ideas to take back control of the media that seeks to control us and watch how God works in your relationship with him and with others.
