Anchorage: The Storm of Loss | Part 7 of 8

DAY 5 OF 7

Death is Not Final

One of the most powerful promises we have from God pertaining to this world is that the death we go through in our flesh is not final. Life is not just a bunch of experiences we have from the moment we breathe our first breath to the moment we breathe our last. There would be little to no meaning to life if that were the case. But this is the hope that we find with the bodily resurrection of Christ from the dead: that though man came from dust and must return to it, we have hope beyond that.

There is a great deal of grief involved in mourning the loss of a loved one, and there is nothing wrong with that. Expressing grief is something even Jesus displayed when He wept at Lazarus’ tomb. We all have various mourning rituals and there are some who find it extremely hard to cope with the concept of death because of the uncertainty that revolves around it. But we, as believers, must have a better understanding of death with the revelation of the eternal hope. As Christ conquered death, He made a way for us to defeat death through our faith in Him and by His good grace. His promise will come to pass that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

We can therefore stand in faith and look death in the eye because of the hope that we have in Christ, and say, “O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?”

Reflection

Remember when you face the storm of loss, when you are grieving the loss of a loved one, that death is not final. These earthly bodies are not our eternal home. Focus your life on getting right with God, turn to Him and accept His grace while there is time. This right relationship with the Father is what gives us hope beyond the grave.
