Spiritual Authority—Part 2
Man’s fascination with the supernatural is well recorded throughout all of history. Here Jesus addresses His own disciples’ preoccupation with their triumph over demonic forces. Neither dismissing its significance nor diminishing their joy, Jesus is helping them identify true priorities for the people of faith.
First, it should be of no surprise that demons were cast out by the disciples. Jesus gave them His power. This power is essential for living as spiritual people in a demon-filled world. But it is not for show or to “prove” their power.
Second, the single-most treasured truth and demonstration of divine power is the Lord’s love, forgiveness, and eternity in exchange for our weakness, sin, and humanity. There is no greater power than that which saves a sinner from hell. There is no comparison to be made. Casting out demons is accomplished in Jesus’ authority; however, the rescue of a sinner required the sacrifice of His life.
