The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 220 OF 365

TRADING PLACES

Christ’s grace to us was manifested when he became poor, according to Paul. While his earthly life was certainly austere, there is no evidence to suggest that Jesus was any poorer than most first-century Galileans.

However, when viewed through an eternal lens, it is clear that Christ laid down riches beyond measure in order to enter time and history on behalf of those who would follow him. Even though he possessed all the wealth of heaven, Jesus chose to set aside his own glory and become a man so that his followers could ultimately share in his glory.

The believer’s relationship with God is based on this incredible juxtaposition. Jesus gave up his wealth of glory so that his followers, in their own spiritual poverty, could share in his relationship with God the Father — a relationship of more value than anything earthly. Because Jesus was willing to become poor, his followers are able to become rich beyond measure if they merely accept the grace he offers.

Jesus, I thank you for all you gave up for me. Please help me to not cling to earthly possessions and to only cling to you. Amen.
