The books of first and second Samuel are named after the prophet Samuel, who was highly respected as a spiritual leader in Israel. He was used to reestablish God’s authority and define true worship for the people of Israel. First Samuel covers nearly one century of Israel’s history, from the birth of Samuel to Saul’s death, a character that will be introduced in this book. We begin by reading about Hannah and her faith in God’s timing and complete love for His children. After years of prayer, Hannah gives birth to Samuel and dedicates him to the Lord. Her prayer after Samuel is dedicated celebrates God’s care and provision for those who remain faithful to Him. Very quickly, we see a battle arise between living under the authority of God and desiring the authority of the world.
