DAY 3 OF 5

Rage

Best and worst

Give everyone a chance to talk about the best and worst moments of their day.

Where did you encounter Jesus today?

Talk to each other about how each family member encountered Jesus, and about something or someone that reminded them of Him.

What did you learn from the Bible passages about:

• the dangers of rage?

• the consequences of rage?

• how to stop or conquer rage?

Thought for the day

Do you know the saying “A teabag only releases its true flavor in boiling water”? In the boiling waters of rage and its big brother, revenge, we sometimes see a side of ourselves that we don’t like, that scares even us!

There was once a boy who kept losing his temper. To help him deal with his angry, his father gave him a bag of nails and told him to hammer one of the nails into the wooden fence around their backyard every time he got angry.

Some time later, the father took his son by the hand, walked him to the fence, and said: “I am proud of you, son, but look at the fence. The fence will never be the way it was. When you say or do something in anger, it leaves a mark, just like the nails in the fence. A wound made by words is just as bad as a real wound on your body.”

Showing mercy is the rule in God’s kingdom. Instead of getting angry, remember that there is no “revenge” as effective as forgiveness. That’s how we live as followers of Jesus!

Activity

There are lots of ways in which to keep calm when we are angry. It’s fine to get angry—it’s one of the emotions that God created us with. But it is not okay to let anger get out of control, to say bad or ugly things, to degrade others or break things.

Here are a few ideas that can help:

• Walk away and let off steam somewhere else.

• Go and hit a pillow.

• Think about a place that makes you feel calm.

• Talk to someone.

• Kick a ball.

• Sing a song or listen to music.

• Draw.

• Go for a jog or a walk.

Prayer

Lord, please help us not to let anger get the upper hand in our lives. Help each of us to hold our tongue when we are angry. Guard what we say in those moments. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Random act of kindness

Think about someone who has made a member of your family angry. Agree together to pray for the person and ask Jesus to bless them.

For parents only

Teach your children how to handle rage properly, remembering that they will follow your example.
