Who Is Jesus

DAY 4 OF 8

Jesus The Savior

The story of the birth of Jesus involves the whole of creation; humans, animals, angels, stars, and the trinity.

The angel in this text reveals that Jesus will, “save people from their sins” and he is “God with us.”

What does it mean to say that he will save us from our sins? People, understandably, have reservations when they are referred to as sinners. Instead, they prefer the neutral word, duty or dharma (a religious concept used by religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and  Jainism). By this they hope to remove the sting of the word “sin.”

Dharma has a lot to do with action and little to do with issues like pride, lust, jealousy and hate, the internal struggles that motivate wrong actions.

However, even if we grant that duty is sufficient, how does one decide between conflicting duties? And what happens when we fail to do our duty? Psychologically we are still overcome by confusion, loneliness, and guilt.

Further, let us assume that Dharma might be a way to understand morality. We still have to contend with Jesus’ claim that, he is the way. There are several implications to this claim in relation to dharma. One, he personifies duty. Two, because he personifies duty, he is no longer indifferent to our failure of following our duty. Three, because he is not indifferent he participates in redeeming us from our failure to fulfill the obligations of duty. Four, he then ultimately enables us to grow in virtue. For anyone who has been trying to fulfill their dharma sincerely, Jesus is good news!

God is with us and he saves us from our sins. He saves us by participating with us; entering our conundrum, he shatters the chaos, not with brute force, instead introduces the order of love. God is with us, what a thought! He is the eternal romantic, who saves us and stays with us.

About this Plan

Who Is Jesus

Who is Jesus? What is his character like? Must we be afraid as God approaches us? Is he truly who he claims to be? Is Jesus accessible to everyone? In this devotion we will explore all of this and more.
