DAY 143 OF 366

Jesus cries from the cross - "Forgive"

We come now to the crucifixion itself and to meditate upon what has been famously described as the “Seven Cries from the Cross”. These are seven sayings of Jesus as He hung dying upon the cross and they give us an illuminating answer to our original question, “What is Easter all about?”

Jesus first cry is one of forgiveness. He had often taught about forgiveness but now Jesus faced the challenge of putting His words into practice. Would He fail? Of course not! Our wonderful Saviour “walked the talk”. Hanging there, bleeding in pain and suffering rejection by those He loved, our innocent, pure and holy Saviour’s first thought was compassion for those who crucified Him.

If I am responsible for Jesus death because of my sin, then I am guilty before God.  I owe Him the penalty debt of my life whether I feel guilty or not and my guilt condemns me to death.  In business when a debt was cancelled it could be said to be “forgiven” and the record of indebtedness cleared. Now Jesus cries out to the Father to forgive those with debts of sin so we would not be condemned by guilt and have clear records!

Prayer: Dear God, thank You that in Jesus because I have received forgiveness there is no more guilt or condemnation!
