Communion
When covenant partners met they would often celebrate their covenant with a meal of remembrance. This caused them to reflect back to their original commitment in celebration and to re-affirm their commitment to one another. This is similar to a married couple having a meal together to remember and celebrate their wedding anniversary. Sometimes life can become so busy that we can forget what is really important.
When we take bread and wine in what is variously described as the Lord’s Supper, Eucharist or Communion we are remembering again what is truly important: Jesus sacrificed His life and paid the penalty for our sins so that we could experience our life’s journey in a loving, intimate relationship with God and enter a heavenly paradise when we die.
We remember too that this is a new covenant based on receiving God’s grace and not an old covenant based on our performance to a set of impossible commandments. Paul explains that some people were taking communion without truly recognising the worthiness of Jesus sacrifice. They were weak because they were trying to live according to their human abilities without receiving Jesus daily strength. Let us take communion in full recognition of Jesus worthiness.
Prayer: Lord I worship You and thank You for this special celebration and remembrance of Your sacrifice for me
